The Most Extensive History of Dolce & Gabbana... Ever.

Well, they've got a book, but still. On the occasion of Stefano and Domenico's twentieth anniversary in men's wear, the Esquire fashion director reflects on their debut. And then, much, much more....

Twenty years ago, well before I shuffled into Via Santa Cecilia 7 with the rest of the men's fashion editors and buyers, Dolce & Gabbana's first men's-wear collection was already creating serious industry buzz. For four years the duo's high-fashion take on women's wear — a bit "fur coat and no knickers," as one journalist described it approvingly at the time — had been rocking and charming Milan. We wondered how their brash exuberance and Sicilian aesthetic might translate into men's wear, and when the lights dimmed for the show, we were not disappointed:
Tailoring at that time was dominated by the big shoulders of the power suit, so what struck home were the dropped shoulders and the oversized workman's clothing: big A-line double-face coats layered on top of droopy, poor-man's cardigans layered on top of drainpipe moleskin pants. Looking at video from the show now, I'm amazed at how many outfits I clearly remember. Part market-square peacock and part romanticized workingman, it was all about the layering. I went straight home to England and attempted to replicate the layered look on an assistant's budget — to somewhat laughable effect. The rest, for them and the rest of us, is history.

Speaking of which, you can now browse the authoritative history of Dolce & Gabbana's men's-wear runway shows, all in one place.... (fonte: www.esquire.com)
