Dolce & Gabbana Men's RTW Spring 2013
Continuing their hymn to Italy, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana time-traveled to Sicily circa 1950 for a nostalgic spring collection. The clothes came to life on a cast of around 70 boys and men from all over the island. They resembled characters from an old movie as they sped down the runway at a frenetic pace set by a live folk band, its leader plucking on a jaw harp.
Authenticity was the underlying message and the show focused — perhaps a tad too literally — on the kind of clothes one used to find in the good old days. Vacation-friendly sportswear dominated. Striped vests and T-shirts with a rustic hand-painted look recalled those worn by lifeguards of yore on the beaches of Cefalù or Mondello. Others were splashed with garish souvenir prints, paired with high-waist shorts with retro-bathing-suit details.
Shirts with flat, open collars and unconstructed suits with voluminous pleated carrot pants could have been pulled straight from a Sicilian grandfather’s wardrobe. Even the leather goods, which included aged briefcases and luggage, were retro to the extreme. Still, the show was a crowd-pleaser, especially when a young boy — or scugnizzo — whizzed by.
